REPLACEMENT DEVELOPMENT CRITICAL TO IMPROVING HERD
As we wrap up 2010 and prepare for 2011 the beef cattle industry faces a wide variety of challenges. These find form in economic issues, regulatory, animal rights and a long subsequent list. But at the end of the day, for those committed to the beef cattle industry the day to day basics are still the most important.

IT’S THE PITTS – CHRISTMAS 2010
To: All the Little Boys and Girls; From: Santa; Subject: My Annual Christmas Letter.

SOIL FERTILITY MANAGEMENT HELPS EASE FARMING COSTS
Mississippi farmers have no control over volatile fertilizer costs but they can use good soil fertility management to offset the effect on production expenses.

THE CATTLE BOOK STORE
Have you visited the ‘net’s best cattle related book store? If it’s about cattle, it’s here! But if you are just going to buy one make it Heather Smith Thomas’s "Storey’s Guide to Raising Beef Cattle". And it’s on sale at 32% off list price!

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT – SEEKING BOTTOM
“Federally inspected cow slaughter is at its highest level in more than a decade, and this slaughter has been based on the lowest cow inventories since the early 1950s.” That statement from analysts with the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS), in the November Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook, pretty well sums up current beef cow reality, as well as a potential dilemma.

Q & A Boards and the Bull Session

With costs of transportation, feed and fertilizer increasing as they have, many producers are compelled to do everything they can to keep these costs down as much as possible in order to maintain their profits.

CULL FOR TRAITS THAT ADVERSELY AFFECT PROFITS
Culling wild cattle has always made good sense. Wild cattle are hard on equipment, people, other cattle, and now we know that they are hard on the bottom line.

COST CONTROL IS A MAJOR FACTOR FOR CATTLE PROFITABILITY
In the last issue we began a discussion of some strategies for reducing the production costs on a typical beef cattle operation. In this issue we will continue this discussion and take a further look at some concepts that can be applied to helping improve your operation’s profitability.

PROCESS NEWBORN CALVES TO ASSURE HEALTHY START IN LIFE
First and foremost, it is important to have cows on a good plane of nutrition at calving time. Cows should calve with a body condition score of 5. When this takes place calf health and survival is at its best.
