APPROVAL OF BEEF CHECKOFF REMAINS HIGH
Seventy-two percent of beef and dairy producers continue to be “somewhat” or “very” well informed about the program and 72 percent approve of the checkoff, according to a recent survey of producers.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — NATIONAL LIVESTOCK I.D. RIDES AGAIN
You might remember the National Animal Identification System. USDA spent years and millions of dollars trying to get it off the ground. The reasons for its ultimate failure are well chronicled, everything from industry partisanship, to a lack of sustained, clear communication from USDA.

GRAZING MULTIPLE LIVESTOCK SPECIES HAS ADVANTAGES
When more than one kind of livestock graze a pasture, there can be several advantages gained, since cattle, sheep and goats have different dietary preferences and grazing behaviors.

DEVELOPING REPLACEMENTS IS A STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS
During rebuilding years, most team sports are forced to play athletes who may not be ready to assume the role or players that lack talent to compete at that level. Building blocks set in place during the recruiting process should bring in qualified replacements that have the ability to step in and perform. These programs often reload, they do not rebuild.

GOOD GRAZING MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT TO PRODUCTIVITY
Practicing good grazing management strategies can be very beneficial to a stocker operation. Pastureland that has been managed appropriately will be more productive for a longer period of time, have higher forage quality, and forage waste will be reduced.

CATTLE MARKET OUTLOOK POSITIVE FOR CULL CATTLE
Cull cow and bull prices have seen grasping at record-high levels in recent months, generating a slew of activity on many cow-calf operations around the country as producers aim to take advantage of the market shift in their favor.

MAKE PLANS IN ADVANCE FOR ESTATE TRANSFER
The time will eventually come when each one’s estate will be transferred to another person or persons. No one knows exactly when that time will be, but it is often assumed that it will be later rather than sooner.

RANCHERS SHOULD PROTECT PROPERTY
Cattle rustling can conjure up different thoughts depending on who you are. Some imagine a scene from an old western where bandana-wearing cowboys gather up a herd of cows and drive them to a distant and secret location. Others might think this is something from the past and doesn’t happen now. Unfortunately, cattle rustling is still a serious issue.

THE CATTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO PROBLEM SOLVING
There is absolutely no place where Murphy’s Law is more
applicable than on the farm or ranch. The old saying of
“what can go wrong, will go wrong” comes true on farms and
ranches around the world on a daily basis.

CULL COWS THAT NO LONGER HAVE A PLACE IN OPERATION
A railroad claims official once said that trains have done more harm to the genetic quality of America’s cow herds than anything else. He said every cow that ever met her doom on a rural track was invariably the best, most productive cow in the plaintiff’s herd.

PROTEIN QUALITY IMPORTANT IN BROODMARES/YOUNG HORSES
Understanding the protein requirements of horses is helpful in selecting the right type of concentrate to complement your forage source.

GATHER INFORMATION TO UNDERSTAND DNA TECHNOLOGIES
Recently, it seems that seedstock and commercial producers are being bombarded with advertising that promotes a variety of DNA marker technologies for application in selection and management programs.

ANIMAL WELFARE IS BASIS OF SOUND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
Animal welfare is the basis of sound animal husbandry. Beef cattle ranchers should consider themselves stewards of a valuable resource that provides high quality protein products to many people throughout the world.

PRODUCERS MUST LEARN TO DO MORE WITH BY-PRODUCTS
Over the last couple of issues we have been discussing feeding by-products to cattle to meet their nutritional needs. As the feed, food, fuel and other industries move forward and grow we are finding increasing uses for base grains (corn, grain sorghum, cottonseed, soybeans, etc.) in applications that are considered more valuable than livestock feeds.

IT’S THE PITTS — I DON’T GET IT
I really enjoy listening to Charles Barkley make commentary about basketball games. I loved watching him play because he was a ferocious competitor, he is highly entertaining, obviously intelligent and from what people say, he’s a great guy.

PRODUCERS URGED TO CHECK OUT JOHNE’S DISEASE PROGRAM
Dairy and beef producers and bovine veterinarians are encouraged to check out the revised Uniform Program Standards for the Voluntary Bovine Johne’s Disease Control Program developed by USDA in conjunction with the U.S. Animal Health Association that went into effect Sept 1.

CATTLE DISEASES
Our site has a listing of most common diseases of beef
cattle including their symptoms, treatment and prevention. In order to profitably operate a cattle operation it is
important to know about these diseases and how to control
and treat them. Check it out and “Bookmark” it for future
reference.

ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION ARE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL MARKETING
The success or failure of your marketing efforts depend
greatly on your ability to communicate to customers and
potential clients about yourself, your breeding program and
when and where your sale will be taking place.

SITE OF THE MONTH

BJR Summerford Charolais is a North Alabama family operation located in Falkville, Alabama. In 1997, after being in the beef cattle seedstock business for 30 years they introduced the Charolais breed into their seedstock program. Today their breeding program consists of over 200 head of Charolais females and 500 head of commercial cattle.  Their website gives visitors a nice look into this progressive operation, with pages dedicated to bulls, females and semen available.  The family photo is a nice personal touch. Congratulation to the Summerford family on a job well done!
