PRE-WEANING CARE CAN REDUCE STRESS IN CALVES
Making better business decisions is the goal for most firms no matter what product or service is their lifeblood. Decisions are often made with all the information available and scrutinized to make sure there will be a profit at the end point. For most, this means carrying out the plan through many phases to make sure proper execution takes place.

THEM AGAINST US — HAVE THEY LOST THEIR MINDS?
High yield agriculture has enabled more people to live without hunger while using less land. High yield agriculture, according to its critics, is also responsible for everything from Amazon deforestation, to increased global warming, to an untenable breakdown of societal relationships.

CLOVERS CAN MAKE BIG CONTRIBUTION TO FORAGE PROGRAM
Clovers are wonderful plants that can contribute greatly to forage/livestock programs, to soil stabilization, and to other situations in which plant vegetation is desired.

GATHERING INFORMATION CAN BE A MEANS OF SURVIVAL FOR PRODUCERS
Finding ways to improve methods rather than re-invent the wheel has always been sound business. Using the tools available to make the right choices often makes a CEO look smart or become unemployed, depending on the result.

CATTLEMEN LOOK FOR LINK BETWEEN GENETICS AND HEALTH
Seasoned cattlemen have long suspected a link between calf genetics and health, and a mounting body of research is proving them right. Uncovering that connection might lead to new tools for managing disease resistance.

With the end of the spring breeding season coming to a close, it’s time to start planning the next step for the cows in your herd pregnancy evaluation.

NEW TEST FINDS E. COLI IN BEEF FASTER AND EASIER
Infrared spectroscopy can detect E. coli faster than current testing methods and can cut days off investigations of outbreaks, according to a study at Purdue University.

MINERAL INTAKE A CRITICAL ISSUE
Over the years we have discussed minerals and mineral programs at length in these articles. Mineral nutrition, in general, has been studied at great length and for the most part a great deal is known about the importance of minerals in cattle nutritional programs.

CATTLE DOGS
Some herding breeds work well with any kind of animals;
others have been bred for generations to work with specific
kinds of animals such as cattle and have developed the
physical characteristics and styles of working that enable
the dogs to better handle these animals. Our Cattle Dog
site includes descriptions, characteristics and photos of
the main breeds of cattle dogs. Plus many ‘how-to’ articles:

PRODUCTIVE PONDS REQUIRE TIME AND EFFORT
Mississippi’s rivers and Gulf waters are popular fishing destinations, but most of the state’s anglers depend on ponds and lakes for their prized catches and quality time in the outdoors.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER…IN SEARCH OF THE OBVIOUS
Hooter was heading for the escalator at Denver international Airport when he heard a voice behind him call, loud and frantic, “SOUTHWEST – WHERE’S SOUTHWEST?”

ANTLER SCORING SOFTWARE
A Mississippi State University research project to convert trail camera photographs into management tools has led to new software that could improve the deer population “picture.”

FEEDING BY-PRODUCTS OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES
As the grain industry has advanced we find ever widening ways to use grain products in other than feeding applications (i.e. corn for the production of ethanol, soybeans for the production of biodiesel, etc.). As the original grain product is converted from its original form to the desired form, in many if not most cases one or more by-products or co-products is produced which has to be disposed of or utilized.

UPGRADING CULL COWS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTS BOTTOM LINE
A cattleman was once overheard saying, “If you don’t make excuses for your cows, they won’t make any excuses and do their job.” Every operation faces difficult decisions. One of the most trying times for some ranchers is when it comes time to cull animals.

NEW ROUND CUTS OFFER MORE VALUE-ADDED OPTIONS
The checkoff-funded Beef Innovations Group (BIG) debuted six new cuts this week from the beef round at the first Innovative Beef Symposium in Denver, part of its effort to help meat processors, manufacturers, retailers, foodservice operators and cattle producers maximize yield, add versatility and increase profitability.

IT’S THE PITTS — HONORED GUESTS
One of the side effects these days of the rotten economy is that people are staying with friends and relatives more when they go on vacation, and if that’s not incentive enough right there to turn around our economy, I don’t know what is.

PLANTING WINTER PASTURE BEST WAY TO WINTER CATTLE
Why plant winter annual forages? One major reason is that species such as ryegrass, wheat and oats grow and provide grazing during the period when bermudagrass and bahiagrass are dormant and unproductive.

GRAIN PROCESSING HAS POSITIVE EFFECTS ON CATTLE PRODUCTION
Livestock producers and feed manufacturers alike have long been aware of the fact that the amount of nutrient extractable from a given type of grain can be enhanced by processing of some type.

NUTRITION IS IMPORTANT PART OF SUCCESS IN THE SHOW RING
The cattle show circuit is a core component of the beef cattle industry in the United States. Few, if any, segments of the cattle business extract the excitement and passion as that found in the show ring.

SITE OF THE MONTH

Riverside Valley Farm, located in Hohenwald, TN, has been producing registered and commercial Limousin cattle since 1987 with an emphasis on homozygous black and polled genetics.  Recently, they have added the popular Lim-Flex breed to their program. James Hamm was the founder of the herd, and upon his death in 2001, the family made the decision to honor his legacy and continue to build on the solid foundation he established.

Today, Riverside Valley Farm is home to some of the top Limousin genetics available, and their website offers visitors a good look into their program. Congratulation to the Hamm family on a job well done!
