TOOLS FOR GENETIC PREDICTION HAVE EXPLODED
If you long for the good old days when a keen eye and perhaps a basic knowledge of cow families was more than enough to sort bulls, you’re not alone. Though genetic selection is more accurate than ever, it can also seem more complex than the Tax Code.

CONSULT WITH VET TO INSURE APPROPRIATE ANTIBIOTIC USE

U.S. BEEF AND PORK FARING WELL IN JAPAN

GENETIC POTENTIAL OF FEED EFFICIENCY BEING EXPLORED
Whoever first uttered that immortal maxim about being unable to manage something without measuring it was likely someone in the cow business—casting a wishful and frustrated glance at his cows, then at his hay pile.

GRAZING SYSTEM IMPROVES LAND AND BENEFITS LIVESTOCK
To the outsider, most would say the cowboy’s passion is to take care of the animals that walk his pastures. Giving his horse a good rub down and a bite of grain after a hard day’s work or making sure the newborns are sheltered from the next storm. These are jobs that, to most, regularly fall under the term “cow hand.”

SCAMMERS, SPAMMERS & CROOKS…
Our free classified ads can be placed by anyone with access to the Internet. While we delete any ad that appears to be a scam, we have no way of checking who posts ads. So be careful and check who you are dealing with before sending any money. Your email address is “hidden” so no spammer can add you to his list, but he can send you an email reply to your ad. They rarely take the time to send out individual spams but if you get one, just hit the delete button! And be very careful of foreign buyers… they are usually scams. But the ads are a great way to buy and sell. Check out the over 500 ads available. And place your free photo ad today!

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — TAKING STOCK OF MARKETS AND THE CYCLE
It’s tough to love blizzards, but at least this winter’s lambasting has helped push beef prices higher.

cattletoday.com/archive/2010/March/CT2183.php

BE PREPARED FOR CALVING PROBLEMS TO ENSURE LIVE CALF
Sometimes a calf cannot be born because he’s not in a position that allows him to enter the birth canal. In other situations he may not be able to progress through the birth canal because he’s too large, or a limb is caught on the pelvic brim, or the head is turned back. Knowing what’s wrong and how to correct it can make a difference in whether you end up with a live calf.

DEFINE HERD GOALS BEFORE MAKING BULL SELECTIONS
Herd goals serve as the foundation for sire selection and provide guidance as to traits with the most economic importance.

ACCURACY OF RECORDS IS IMPORTANT TO IRS
The accuracy and businesslike nature of records is something that the IRS has been scrutinizing more and more in recent years. ULTRASOUND USED TO IMPROVE REPRODUCTIVE MANAGEMENT

OLD FRIENDS – OLD ACQUAINTANCES
Maybe it was sipping a cold beer in the same bar where Teddy Roosevelt, Captain Richard King, Robert E. Lee, Babe Ruth and so many other American icons had once sat.

GRASS TETANY CAN CAUSE A SERIOUS GRAZING PROBLEM

MANAGE SOIL FOR FERTILITY IN PASTURES
When hay is removed from a hayfield, it makes sense to think that a substantial amount of nutrients are being carted off in each bale. However, when cattle graze in a pasture, it is reasonable to expect that most of those nutrients are recycled back to the pasture.

cattletoday.com/archive/2007/March/CT890.shtml

NOT ALL HERD BULLS ARE CREATED EQUAL
Some are more fertile than others and some have more sex drive (the desire to breed cows).

cattletoday.com/archive/2003/February/CT256.shtml

MINERAL INTAKE CRITICAL FOR REPRODUCTION
The old saying goes “if you don’t get them bred, you’re not going to accomplish much.” Nutrition’s effect on the brood cow can’t be underestimated.
