HAPPY NEW YEAR from all of us at CATTLE TODAY and Ranchers.net.
We hope 2010 brings good weather, a better economy, and above all,
great cattle prices!
PAY ATTENTION TO MANAGEMENT OF BULLS DURING DEVELOPMENT PERIOD
About this time of the year many producers begin giving
thought to the future of their cow herd and what the New
Year will bring. One major decision they will make will be
whether or not they will need to buy a new bull or bulls to
replace current animals in the herd.

IT’S THE PITTS — WITH GAVEL THEY TRAVEL
There are two two things I don’t know for sure about
auctioneers: I can’t pin down exactly why they are called
“Colonels” and I don’t know where the tradition started that
they use gavels.

AFLATOXIN MOST PROBLEMATIC OF THE MYCOTOXINS
In part 1 of this series we began a discussion on the
effects of mycotoxins in beef cattle. To review, remember
that mycotoxins are chemical agents (toxins) produced by a
wide variety of naturally existing fungi.

HIGH FERTILIZER PRICES AFFECT CROP DECISIONS
World demand for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium has
driven the price of these fertilizers past record levels,
and Mississippi producers are trying to make 2008 crop
decisions in light of steadily rising costs.

CALVES’ PASSIVE IMMUNITY AFFECTS LIFETIME PERFORMANCE
A successful cow/calf operation requires that a large
percentage of cows wean a live calf every year. A live calf
at weaning time requires survival of the offspring from
birth to weaning. Cattle that are healthy as calves, healthy
weaned stockers, and remain healthy throughout finishing,
are more productive and much more cost efficient.

MAKE SOUND JUDGEMENTS ABOUT HERD SIRES
It is important for producers to make sound judgments about
their herd sires. A poor bull buying decision might leave a
producer with a product they don’t need or don’t want in
their herd.

PROCESS NEWBORN CALVES TO ASSURE HEALTHY START IN LIFE
First and foremost, it is important to have cows on a good
plane of nutrition at calving time. Cows should calve with a
body condition score of 5. When this takes place calf health
and survival is at its best.

Since 1830, the Meadows family has been farming the same
corner of southeastern Alabama. Today, Meadows Creek Farm,
owned by Richard and Glenn Meadows, maintains that family
tradition by farming land that was owned and operated by all
four of their great-grandfathers. While the methods of
farming have changed over the past 179 years, the Meadows
Creek commitment to integrity, hard-work, and family has
not. Meadows Creek Farm has been in the registered Charolais
business since 1983. They also diversify by farming peanuts,
grain sorghum and small grains along with their purebred and
commercial herds. Their new website gives visitors a nice
look into their operation and their plans for the future.
Congratulations to Meadows Creek Farm on a job well done.
