VARYING WEATHER CONDITIONS MAY THREATEN WINTER HAY
A gamut of weather conditions in the Southeast – from
drought to extreme rain – may significantly impact the
quality and supply of the hay crop in coming months.

INCREASE RETURNS BY IMPROVING VALUE OF CULL COWS
Over the next few months, producers with spring-calving
herds will be evaluating their cowherd and assessing the
productivity, health and reproductive efficiency of their
females. This is a great time to scrutinize and clean up the
factory because most calves have been weaned and sold and
annual pregnancy testing is conducted as part of a good
management plan.

ROTATIONAL GRAZING MANAGEMENT PREVENTS OVERGRAZING
Rotational grazing systems are generally the most efficient
way to get the best utilization of pastures and maximum beef
production per acre, as well as being healthier for the land
and forage plants, in many instances.

CATTLE DISEASES
Our site has a listing of most common diseases of beef
cattle including their symptoms, treatment and prevention.
In order to profitably operate a cattle operation it is
important to know about these diseases and how to recognize,
control and treat them.

ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION ARE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL MARKETING
The success or failure of your marketing efforts depend
greatly on your ability to communicate to customers and
potential clients about yourself, your breeding program and
when and where your sale will be taking place.

PROPER MANAGEMENT CAPTURES BENEFIT OF YEARLING SIRES
Most cattlemen are in tune with the needs of the cow herd.
Careful management follows the production cycle, whether its
matching cows’ production to the forage cycle or finding an
inexpensive alternative to make sure proper nutrition is
given at the right time. For most, the bull battery is an
after thought when it comes to extra management because a
lot of times those walking bulls will stand around for
several months doing nothing before they are called upon to
service the cow herd.

THE CATTLE CLUB
Have you visited the CattleClub yet? It’s like FaceBook,
except for cattle people. It’s a great place to meet and
learn more about cattle producers in your part of the
country. You can also upload photos into your own Photo
Album. Or join or create a group for your breed. Have a live
chat with your friends. Give it a try. And did I mention
it’s free?
SELENIUM IS IMPORTANT IN ANIMAL AND HUMAN DIETS
In the past we have discussed a number of nutrients and how
they contribute to the cow’s dietary needs. This article
will deviate from this format somewhat because it will not
only address a nutritional issue related to the bovine but
also to humans as well.

PRODUCERS SHOULD BE PRUDENT IN USE OF ANTIBIOTICS
A priority for all cattle producers is the health and well-
being of their animals. Antibiotics and antimicrobials are
an important and necessary tool in protecting animal health
and well-being. However, antibiotic use in livestock
agriculture and the potential for antibiotic residues in
beef at the consumer level is among the hottest topic areas
in U.S. beef production circles.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — ROCK BOTTOM…MAYBE
Though markets remain fragile and volatile, there are plenty
of signs that the nation’s economy is on the cusp of
recovery.

FALL IS A GOOD TIME TO FOCUS ON HERD HEALTH
Fall is one of the rancher’s best times to make management
decisions that affect herd health and profitability. Now
is a good time to run cattle through the chute for
vaccinations, pregnancy check and parasite control.

RESEARCH SHOWS FLAVOR AS IMPORTANT AS TENDERNESS
There’s been a lot of talk about tenderness in the beef
industry lately. Tenderness markers have been identified and
bulls are marketed with much fanfare surrounding this single
trait. So tenderness must be king with the consumer, right?

THE CATTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO PROBLEM SOLVING
There is absolutely no place where Murphy’s Law is more
applicable than on the farm or ranch. The old saying of
“what can go wrong, will go wrong” comes true on farms and
ranches around the world on a daily basis.

Located on the grassy hills of Northwest Georgia halfway
between Chattanooga, Tenn and Atlanta, Ga. deGraan Farms has
been in the family for four generations and is now owned by
Bobby and Jennifer deGraan. The deGraans have genetically
selected their cattle to produce high quality, lean beef off
the native grasses and legumes provided by the environment.
They have taken great steps to raise their cattle without
the use of hormones or sub-therapeutic antibiotics. Their
website gives visitors a first-hand look at this progressive
commercial operation and the opportunity to purchase some of
their grass-fed beef. Congratulations to deGraan Farms
on a job well done.

WINDOWS 7
Microsoft has just released it’s latest version of Windows.
Called Windows 7 it is a replacement for Vista. Should you
upgrade your old computer? In a word, no. Most early
adopters appear to like Microsoft’s new OS, but some are
having problems with installation bugs. It’s common for new
versions of software to cause some headaches. So unless you
have a compelling reason to upgrade, save money and
headaches and stick with your old windows.
