HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — TURN THE TABLES OF ACTIVISM
“In a world of seven billion people and expanding, where
malnutrition, hunger or outright famine are commonplace,
it’s dumbfounding that Time magazine would take one of the
great American success stories — the efficient agricultural
production of an abundant variety of healthy, safe and
affordable foods for consumers in the U.S. and throughout
the world — and turn it into an unrecognizable story of
exploitation, manipulation and greed,” wrote J. Patrick
Boyle, president and CEO of the American Meat Federation.

IT’S THE PITTS – SPEED BUMPS
If you asked most auctioneers I think they’d agree that
momentum is what makes auctions the best way to sell darn
near anything.

ABORTIONS IN COWS CAN BE CAUSED BY MANY FACTORS
Abortion is expulsion of a premature fetus before it reaches
a viable stage of life, or expulsion of a dead fetus at any
stage of gestation. Many early abortions take place without
being noticed; at early stages of gestation the embryo or
fetus may not be large enough to be easily seen.

GRAIN PROCESSING HAS POSITIVE EFFECTS ON CATTLE PRODUCTION
Livestock producers and feed manufacturers alike have long
been aware of the fact that the amount of nutrient extractable
from a given type of grain can be enhanced by processing of
some type.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER MCCORMICK – PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS
Hooter learned a long time ago never to say never. When you
owned a patch of grass and an entrepreneurial heart never
always seemed to roll around sooner than someday.

FESCUE 911 – SHOULD I KEEP IT OR REPLACE IT?
Tall fescue pastures in the Southeast have taken a real
beating over the past three to four years. Extreme drought
and the severe overgrazing of these pastures have caused
substantial stand declines.

HUNTING IS NOW A MAJOR ECONOMIC FORCE IN RURAL AMERICA
As a third-generation Texas rancher, Richard Nunley knows
the value of raising quality cattle. But he’s also come to
realize the importance of managing his ranch more
holistically, and understands that preserving and protecting
wildlife habitat not only is good for his cows, but also for
his bottom line.

FORAGE QUALITY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN CATTLE PRODUCTION
Every cattle producer knows that forage production is
typically the single expenditure in most livestock
operations. Since forage is the foundation of most cattle
diets, an understanding of forage quality can be a very
important management tool.

CATTLE DOGS
Some herding breeds work well with any kind of animals;
others have been bred for generations to work with specific
kinds of animals such as cattle and have developed the
physical characteristics and styles of working that enable
the dogs to better handle these animals. Our Cattle Dog
site includes descriptions, characteristics and photos of
the main breeds of cattle dogs. Plus many ‘how-to’ articles:
“FAILURE TO FILE” SYNDROME BECOMING MORE COMMON
A surprising number of people have not filed tax returns for
three years or more. Eventually, they realize the IRS will
catch up with them. Research shows that most non-filers are
financially sophisticated, successful professionals,
including attorneys and accountants.

UPGRADING CULL COWS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTS BOTTOM LINE
A cattleman was once overheard saying, “If you don’t make
excuses for your cows, they won’t make any excuses and do
their job.” Every operation faces difficult decisions. One
of the most trying times for some ranchers is when it comes
time to cull animals.

Founded in 1971 by Harvey and Nina Lemmon with the original
purchase of 113 Angus females, Lemmon Angus and the Lemmon
family became fixtures within the Angus breed. Over the
years, Lemmon Angus has contributed to the breed’s
advancement producing high impact performance females. In
2007, Harvey Lemmon began the process of establishing a
succession plan for the cow herd and the business that he
and Nina had carefully crafted. That plan became reality in
January of 2008 with the purchase of the Lemmon Angus herd
by an owner/operating team which includes Dan Beckham and
Roland Starnes. Operating in the rolling hills of west
central Georgia, 60 miles south of Atlanta, Lemmon Angus has
grown to over 1000 head of purebred Angus cattle serving
commercial and seedstock producers throughout the United
States. The Lemmon website does an excellent job of giving
visitors a look inside their successful operation.
Congratulations to Lemmon Angus on a job well done.
