CALF HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION
The management, nutrition and subsequent performance of
calves is a topic of constant debate. In general this
discussion begins with that period immediately after birth
and continues on through the growing animal’s life.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — MAKING CULL COWS PAY MORE
Pity the cull cow. Her becoming one always signifies a
failure of sorts, never a victory.

DNA TESTS CAN HELP BREEDERS IN TRAIT SELECTION
Originally used in the livestock industry to identify
individual animals and verify parentage for breed registry
purposes, DNA testing is now being used in a wide variety of
ways to help cattle producers select for certain desirable
traits.

MANAGE STRESS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE IN STOCKER CATTLE
Within the next few months huge numbers of freshly weaned
cattle will be shipped from the ranch to grass and grazing
programs.

EARLY WEANING HELPFUL DURING CHALLENGING TIMES
In recent years in much of the United States, especially the
South and Southwest, precipitation has been highly variable,
and drought situations have become common. This year Texas
may have set the record for the most severe drought
conditions ever. Cow-calf producers in this region have
learned or must learn to manage cattle and pastures through
times of drought in order to stay in business.

SUCCESSFUL SOIL FERTILITY PROGRAM INVOLVES SIX STEPS
A complete and successful soil fertility program involves
six steps, according to Noble Foundation soil and crops
specialist Jim Johnson.

IT’S THE PITTS — WARNING: READ THIS

Me neither.

RANCH WEATHER
If you have not visited our Ranch Weather site lately you
are in for a surprise. We have had a major software
upgrade with much improved weather radar and hurricane
information. It still retains the 10 day precip and
temperature maps, drought index, soil moisture map and
plant hardiness chart. In addition you can now customize
your opening page. Try out all the new features.
AUCTION MARKETS ALLOW PRODUCERS TO MARKET CALVES WITH CONFIDENCE
Many challenges face livestock producers. Lack of available
credit and Mother Nature refusing to cooperate, in some
areas, could be at the top of the list. Health outbreaks,
calving problems or the bull being in the neighbor’s pasture
have caused more than one sleepless night. Changes in the
beef industry have also added producer questions when it
comes time to market the calf crop.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER — BINKY BAXTER SCARES A GHOST
Hooter’s visits to the “in-laws”—Claire’s sister and her
family—were infrequent, but always enlightening. It was
Bugsy’s cousins, who provided most of the insight.

IT’S THE PITTS — IT’S NOT MY FAULT
Have you noticed how nothing is nobody’s fault any more. An
accused mass murderer is not guilty because his daddy
whipped him when he was a pup. Or his mother took away his
teddy bear. If a politician gets caught with his pants down
it’s not his fault… it’s the media’s fault for bringing it
to the attention of his wife. Currently the art of excuse-
making is being raised to new heights by husbands, Wall
Street businessmen and politicians.

BREEDERS MUST BUILD GOOD REPUTATION TO MARKET CATTLE
Artists showcase their talents in a gallery to sell their
product. A seedstock producer’s display case is the sale
ring where potential customers appraise his offering.

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY DEHORN CATTLE
Most cattlemen raising horned breeds choose to dehorn their
stock, since horns in the herd can be a nuisance and a hazard.

Caps Lock
Your keyboard has small, hard to see lights (LEDs) to
indicate if your CAPS, NUM and SCROLL lock keys are on or
off. Sometimes when I’m in a hurry typing I accidentally
hit the Caps Lock button and then have to retype.
Here’s how to make your computer beep whenever any of the
lock keys change state: Go to the Control Panel and Double
click Accessibility Options and check ToggleKeys checkbox.
OR
SPEED UP DELETE
To speed up file deletion, turn off Windows’s delete
confirmation. First, right-click the Recycle Bin on your
Desktop and select Properties from the pop-up menu. Click
the “Global” tab and check the radio button labeled “Use one
setting for all drives.” Uncheck the box labeled “Display
delete confirmation dialog box.” Finally, click Apply and OK
to save changes. If you make a mistake you can still
recover the file from the Recycle Bin.
