CALVES NEED PROPER NUTRITION FOR A GOOD START
Having a live, healthy calf on the ground is the core of the
cow/calf operation. It is generally understood that in order
to have a successful cow/calf operation the first thing that
must happen is to get the cow bred. Secondly that cow must
deliver a live calf with as few complications as possible.
The third step in this process is for that cow to provide
adequate milk and nutrition for that calf to grow and
develop to weaning.

IT’S THE PITTS — CROSSBRED COWBOYS
Scholars say that people work for four reasons: habit,
money, power or pleasure. I would add a fifth reason after
conducting an informal survey of my entire family.

VITAMIN E IMPORTANT TO IMMUNITY AND REPRODUCTION
Vitamin E was first identified as nutritionally essential
for animals about 60 years ago. Rats fed purified diets
without vitamin E did not reproduce, plain and simple. Many
similar studies have shown similar results in domestic,
managed species.

SOMETIMES THE GRASS IS WEEDIER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE
Farmers and ranchers are seeing more weeds – both common and
unusual varieties – this year, according to Dr. Vanessa
Corriher, Texas AgriLife Extension Service forage specialist
based at Overton.

REDUCE HEAT STRESS IN CATTLE TO MAINTAIN PROFITS
When you work in the livestock industry it’s fairly common
to hear at least a few stories each summer about someone who
suffered fairly extensive animal or production losses due to
excessive heat or heat stress.

RESEARCH IS ESSENTIAL TO A SUCCESSFUL E.T. PROGRAM
Embryo Transfer can be an excellent tool for production of
superior genetics. However, given the complexity and expense
it should not be entered into without extensive thought and
research, especially in selection of donor animals.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER MCCORMICK — READING THE STARS
Peetie and Hooter were swapping thoughts about the economy,
the state of the world and how it was that ammunition and
gun sales were off the charts.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE MENU PRICE OF BEEF?
Farm and ranch freezers are often full of home-raised beef,
yet producer families still enjoy the classic steakhouse
experience now and again.

SOIL, FORAGE TESTING IS IMPORTANT IN FORAGE PRODUCTION
Most cattle producers view their primary function as that of
producing animals – more specifically, beef. However, in
most cases the actual role the cattle producer plays is not
just that of producing beef. More accurately is a role of
turning grass into beef.

Six generations of the Briggs family have raised commercial
cattle in Texas.  In 1990 Briggs Ranch Genetics owner
Kenneth Briggs began to research and buy Wagyu genetics.
Briggs was so impressed with Wagyu, he began converting his
commercial Angus herd to Wagyu cattle. Today, Briggs Ranch
Genetics, Rice, Texas, is home to one of the premier Wagyu
herds in the United States.  Their website introduces
visitors to the Wagyu breed and gives interesting
information and facts on this Japanese breed of cattle.
Congratulations to Briggs Ranch Genetics on their attractive
and informative website.
