MONITORING HERD HEALTH SECURITY IMPORTANT
Over recent years cattle producers have become increasingly
aware of the need to take steps to insure the “health
security of their herds.” World events have created an
interest and concern for keeping our families and homes
safe.

GOOD RECORD KEEPING IS TEDIOUS TASK FOR PRODUCERS
Working with different data sets should help producers make
better decisions. Depending on short or long term goals,
sometimes operations get wires crossed as to the best way to
attack the problem.

TRACE MINERAL DEFICIENCIES CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS IN HERD
Some minerals, like calcium and phosphorus, are required in
fairly large amounts by the body, but deficiency is
generally not a problem because these macro-minerals are
often present in high levels in many feeds.

SOIL AND FORAGE TESTING

HEALTHY HERD IS BEST DEFENSE AGAINST CRYPTOSPORIDIOSIS
Cryptosporidiosis is a protozoal disease that is similar to
coccidiosis in several ways. Protozoa are one-celled animals
and most kinds are harmless. But several types cause disease
in animals and most of these are transmitted by the fecal-
oral route; the protozoa are passed in the feces of an
infected animal and are ingested by a susceptible animal via
contaminated feed or water or when licking a dirty hair coat
or suckling a dirty udder.

IT’S THE PITTS – MY TALE OF WHOA
I can’t help but think that part of the reason for our
current economic troubles are all the drastic changes
brought about by the new economy, which is based on the
personal computer and the Internet.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND FEED LABELS
Labeling of feed products has become increasingly complex,
both for the manufacturer and the end user.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A friend sent me this corny joke that I thought was worth
sharing… Two cows were standing next to each other in a
field. One cow said, “I was artificially inseminated this
morning!” The other cow said, “I don’t believe you.” The
first cow said, “Its true. No bull.”
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS…
But bad pictures of your cattle can cost you plenty! Many
potential customers cannot visit your ranch to view your
cattle in person, but when they see your cattle in your photo
album, a sale catalog, or in an advertisement in your breed
publication, CATTLE TODAY or on the Internet, you want their
first impression to be a good one. Here are some great tips
to improve your cattle pictures.

EMBRYO TRANSFER BECOMING MORE POPULAR WITH PRODUCERS
Embryo transfer in cattle has recently gained considerable
popularity with seedstock dairy and beef producers. While
most modern applicable embryo transfer technology was
developed in the 1970s and 1980s, the history of the
procedure goes back considerably farther.

The Ratliff 3R Bar Ranch, since 1905, is a 3rd generation
family operated business and was recently recognized as an
Oklahoma Centennial ranch. Over the years, the ranching
activities have grown from meager beginnings, to dairy, to
commercial, to registered cattle and for over the past 20
years their focus and mission has been the production of
lean, healthy, all natural, organic, grass-fed
beef……..Fullblood Limousin cattle! Owners Paul and Devey
Ratliff have done a great job of putting together a nice
website with lots of good information about their operation
as well as some great pictures of their cattle.
Congratulations to Ratliff 3R Bar Ranch on a job well done.
