QUALITY FORAGES NECESSARY FOR TOP HERD PERFORMANCE
Over the last few weeks I have received a number of calls
from producers indicating they are unhappy with how their
cattle are coming out of this past winter. Across the board
they have commented that their herds lost more weight than
normal and that they are concerned about rebreeding. This
has been especially true of the heifers.

WELL MANAGED RANCH HORSES GET THE JOB DONE
Many have idolized John Wayne and given him the “Ultimate
Cowboy” title. The swagger, the stellar walk and confident
voice give off a romantic glow of a lifestyle that is
anything but a Hollywood movie. Besides the cast of
supporting actors, most of these films had something else in
common, good looking horses.

WATCH CATTLE FOR OVER-GRAZING ON GREEN PASTURES
Cattle “going for the green” by grazing in recovering
pastures are following nature’s call, but producers should
avoid over-grazing and make sure cattle still have adequate
care and nutrition, said Texas AgriLife Extension Service
experts.

IT’S THE PITTS — REVOLUTION
We are always hearing that what we need to do to solve all
of our problems is “come together.” I hope I don’t get hung
for treason for suggesting this but maybe what we need to do
is come apart.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER MCCORMICK — BAIL OUT
It was chatting with Bugsy about government and how it works
for her social studies class that got Hooter to pondering
the fact he hadn’t written his Congressman for too long.
He’d been too fed up with the nonsense, frustrated by their
failure to recognize reality.

ELIMINATE WEEDS TO IMPROVE PASTURES
Webster’s dictionary defines a weed as “a plant that is not
valued where it is growing and is usually of vigorous
growth; especially: one that tends to overgrow or choke out
more desirable plants.” This is especially true in pasture
and hayfield situations.

SCAMMERS, SPAMMERS & CROOKS…
Our free classified ads can be placed by anyone with access
to the Internet.  While we delete any ad that appears to be
a scam, we have no way of checking who posts ads.  So be
careful and check who you are dealing with before sending
any money.  Your email address is “hidden” so no spammer can
add you to his list, but he can send you an email reply to
your ad.  They rarely take the time to send out individual
spams but if you get one, just hit the delete button!  And
be very careful of foreign buyers… they are usually scams.
But the ads are a great way to buy and sell.  Check out the
almost 1600 ads available.  And place your free photo ad

RECENT TAX COURT CASE CLARIFIES IRS REGULATIONS
Many people who own livestock farms are full-time
professionals in non-farming fields. But another large
segment of ranching consists of retired individuals who wish
to supplement their retirement income with profits from
ranching, farming or raising horses. The IRS often enough
will assess deficiencies against these individuals based on
the idea that the activity is simply a means of generating
tax write-offs.

PLAN AHEAD TO PREVENT GRAZING CHALLENGES ON SPRING PASTURES
Cattlemen generally look forward to the spring of the year.
Pasture forages typically begin growing rapidly producing
large amounts of lush, green pasture. Unfortunately, given
the drought conditions that many areas continue to
experience, this is not the case everywhere, but many areas
it is.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM IS OPTIMISTIC
If you believe in experience and the wisdom wrought by it,
then now is no time to panic in the cattle business. It’s
just a matter of navigating the rough economic stretch for
the next year or so.

EARLY DETECTION OF PREGNANCY PROBLEMS IMPORTANT
There are a number of things that can go wrong during the
last phase of pregnancy. Some of these problems can be
resolved or dealt with rather easily, and others are more
serious — and can be life threatening to the cow or fetus.

INTERNAL PARASITE CONTROL VITAL TO CATTLE PERFORMANCE
As we enter the spring of the year we are reminded that
control of internal and external parasites may be one of the
most important of the concepts affected by management.

THERE IS NO GENERIC FORMULA TO SOUND HERD HEALTH
Cattlemen, over the years, have worked diligently to produce
the best product possible. Different philosophies have
developed different components of the management scenario.
Keeping all of these components working together in harmony
is still a challenge for most operators.

SELECTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF REPLACEMENT HEIFERS IS IMPORTANT
Maintenance of a quality cow herd requires a constant input
of new breeding females. At this time of the year, as fall
calving producers are evaluating heifers they are preparing
to wean and spring calvers considering the new calf crop
they both have decisions to make.

We are proud to feature Horse Stomp Ranch of Poplarville,
Miss. this month.  Owners Louis Brodie and Jess Brown have
put together a clean and effective website. Visitors get a
good look at their operation, and the website features nice
photos of the cattle and the farm. Their logo at the top of
the page is really effective too. Congratulations to Horse
Stomp Ranch on a job well done.

If you suspect one of your open programs is causing a
problem, save any data and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open
the Close Program box. This box displays Not Responding after
the program name if it shows trouble spots. You may be able
to save your Windows session by selecting an unresponsive
program and pressing End Task to terminate it. (You may have
to wait several moments for an End Task confirmation dialog
to appear.) Sometimes you can unstick one frozen program by
terminating another that’s not responding – a trick that
could save any unsaved data.

Lottery Winners!
This site has a picture and short bio on almost 200 lottery
winners who have over $2 Billion in combined winnings.  Just
click on their picture for the bio.  I always considered the
lottery a tax on ignorance since it only pays .50 cents on
the dollar.  Kinda’ interesting though.
