MVE SEMEN TANKS
You can breed your cows to the best bulls in the world!
Artificial insemination (A.I.) using frozen beef semen
offers cattle producers an opportunity to breed their cows
to bulls possessing far superior genetics than are available
locally and do it at an affordable price. With A.I. you have
an economically feasible means of increasing productivity
over a wide range of traits to rapidly improve your cattle.
Using the top genetics available with frozen beef semen will
allow you to select for traits to improve calving ease,
weaning weight, yearling weight, maternal ability and
carcass quality with a high degree of accuracy. And beef
semen and frozen embryos stored in liquid nitrogen in one of
our MVE semen tanks will last for years. Buy the best semen
tanks from people you trust.

IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY MAKES SEXED SEMEN A REALITY
Artificial insemination is not new to the beef business. A
large percentage of purebred cattlemen have been taking
advantage of this genetic improvement opportunity for
generations. Now, AI, with sexed semen, is taking shape and
finding a niche with cattlemen who look to capitalize on
advances in sexing technology.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE PREPARED DURING CALVING SEASON
For most regions, the seasons: spring, summer, fall and
winter dictate the production practices for cow/calf
operations. Like clockwork, a change in the weather brings a
new task at hand. Depending on the region in which cattlemen
live, things to do could vary from season to season, but
Mother Nature still dictates when the important tasks of
breeding, harvesting feedstuffs and calving occur.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — PROTECTIVE VERSUS PRODUCTIVE
“If there’s any part of our value system we need to rebuild
in this country, it’s personal responsibility,” says John
Kasich, a former Congressman, who is now a best selling
author, motivational speaker and Fox News commentator.

PRODUCER FINDS SUCCESS IN ERADICATING TOXIC FESCUE
The Missouri Soil and Conservation Board awarded Ron Locke
of Long Lane, Mo., the 2008 State Grass Land Farmer of the
Year last November. His annual spring cleaning for the past
few years may well be the reason he gained the board’s
respect.

U.S. BEEF EXPORT SUCCESS CONTINUES
The international marketplace continued to roll out the red
carpet for U.S. beef products in 2008, recording double-
digit increases over 2007 levels, according to statistics
released by the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

WATER QUALITY IS IMPORTANT TO LIVESTOCK HEALTH
Of all the nutrients, water is the most important. And often
the most overlooked.

IT’S THE PITTS — WHO DIED?
There are words in the English language that excite the
reader or listener like no other. I am referring to phrases
such as ‘estate sale,’ ‘complete dispersal’ and ‘clearance
sale.’

SPECIAL SALES BRING PREMIUM PRICES FOR CALVES
Local auction yards and alliances can be a good place to get
premiums for your calves, if you take advantage of special
sales. Whether these sales are for preconditioned calves,
age-and-source-verified cattle, CAB or natural cattle,
buyers know they can go to that sale and get what they
want—and sellers are rewarded because of the demand created
by special sales.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER MCCORMICK — DOMINOS OF DOOM
Dried palm branches are highly flammable. In retrospect,
Hooter knew that he knew that because it was the dried
branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday that fueled
the burden burner used during the annual healing service;
the ashes later used for Ash Wednesday.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A $500 AND A $5,000 BULL?
Producers are getting a first-hand education in
relative bull values as they participate in value-based
marketing. It’s not unusual to see a $400 value
difference from top to bottom individuals in a finished
pen of steers. Multiply that times progeny, including
the relative value of daughters over time, and you can
see why the bull value spreads are widening.

IT’S THE PITTS — THE WHITE NIGHTMARE
The two cowboys who worked on a big western spread came into
town every Sunday to do their laundry at the Suds For Duds
and attend “services” at the Pastime Bar. There they loaded
up on beans and crackers and shot a little pool. Eight ball
was a game they practiced with religious fervor and had
become quite proficient at.

MINERAL INTAKE CRITICAL FOR REPRODUCTION
The old saying goes “if you don’t get them bred, you’re not
going to accomplish much.” Nutrition’s effect on the brood
cow can’t be underestimated.

ULTRASOUND USED TO IMPROVE REPRODUCTIVE MANAGEMENT
An ultrasound machine is a powerful tool that allows a
veterinarian or rancher to essentially “climb inside the cow”
to look at the ovaries and uterus.

TAKE A PROACTIVE STANCE TO PREVENT BLOAT
About this time each year my phone starts ringing with
producers complaining of bloat problems. In some cases the
producer is faced with an isolated case or two. In other
cases the effect is disastrous with many cattle being
affected.

At New Canaan Cattle Company in Searcy, AR it all began with
a promise. In 1969, a young man made this Promise to his
sweetheart: One day the young couple would own a farm where
they could rear their children, and raise a hundred head of
good quality cattle. In 1983, the Promise became reality
with the purchase of several acres most others would have
rejected. Twenty five years later, years full of hands-on
learning, hard-earned experience and the solid advice of
cattlemen in all stages of life, owners David and Beverly
Staggs are preparing for their first production sale in
June. Their website does a really nice job of introducing
visitors to the program and giving them an up close look at
this family owned operation. Congratulations!

Q U O T E O F T H E M O N T H
“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating
the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without
working for, another person must work for without receiving.
The government cannot give to anybody anything that the
government does not first take from somebody else. When half
of the people get the idea that they do not have to work
because the other half is going to take care of them, and
when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to
work because somebody else is going to get what they work
for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”
