POOLING CALVES CAN MAKE THEM MORE PROFITABLE
Marketing calves is a challenge sometimes, especially if a
producer has a small herd. Order buyers are mainly
interested in full semi-loads and it’s harder to sell a
smaller number of calves.

SOIL QUALITY IMPACTS SIZE OF DEER ANTLERS
Mississippi State University researchers are investigating
the connection between soil fertility and antler size as

SOUND NUTRITION PROGRAM IMPORTANT FOR SHOW CATTLE
About this time of the year, thousands of families start
countless cattle on feed in hopes of achieving show ring
stardom! The cattle show circuit is a significant component
of the beef cattle industry in the United States.

CLOVERS CAN REDUCE DEPENDENCE ON EXPENSIVE INPUTS
Forage legumes can provide livestock producers some relief
from the skyrocketing cost of applying nitrogen fertilizer
to their pastures, said a Texas AgriLife Research scientist.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — SAME OLD CYCLE?
There’s a good reason the new cattle cycle is behaving so
irrationally: it may still be the old one.

IT’S THE PITTS — FUNCTIONAL AMNESIA
Thanks to computers and technology people are forgetting how
to do things they used to routinely do.

RECOGNIZE YOUR CALVES?
Most of the calves now nursing cows will be weaned in the
next few weeks. Some will shrug it off with little stress
and therefore little negative effect on later performance.
Others will enter a downward spiral of health from which
they may not recover. Which calves are yours?

CONSIDER EARLY WEANING WHEN FEED COSTS RISE
A management consideration that cow calf producers may want
to consider when a change in traditional production systems
may be necessary due to adverse production or marketing
conditions such as lack of forage, adverse market trends,
noncompetitive freight rates, adverse weather, etc., is
early weaning of their calves.

OPPORTUNITIES TO ENHANCE REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE
There is one absolute fact that is central to the cow/calf
sector of the beef industry. In order for an operation to
“work” you have to get cows bred and get them bred
efficiently.

MANY PRODUCERS MAKING RESTOCKING PLANS
The dry weather of 2007, and to some extent 2006, reduced
the size of Alabama cow herds and in some cases, the entire
herd was disbursed. Weather conditions have improved as of
late and many cattlemen are planning rebuilding efforts.
Several factors should be considered as you begin
rebuilding.

CATTLE DOGS
Some herding breeds work well with any kind of animals;
others have been bred for generations to work with specific
kinds of animals such as cattle and have developed the
physical characteristics and styles of working that enable

is to sell your seedstock cattle on a private treaty basis.
