TREATING TWO ACTIVITIES AS ONE BENEFICIAL FOR TAXES
Sometimes a farm, livestock or horse activity may be closely
connected to one’s principal occupation, with certain tax
advantages. If two activities are treated as one, deductions
and income from each activity can be aggregated in deciding
whether the taxpayer has the requisite profit motive under
the IRS hobby loss rule.

IT’S THE PITTS — SOMETHING’S MISSING
When I shook his hand I knew right away that something was
missing. The reason I didn’t have a good grasp on the
situation was that what was missing was the rancher’s thumb
and opposing appendage.

SUMMER FORAGE MANAGEMENT CAN BE A CHALLENGE
Dry conditions shorten the available grazing and increase
the time for supplemental feeding of beef cattle of all
classes. Although certain areas have received moderate to
adequate rainfall, other areas continue to be dry and feel
the effects of reduced rainfall this summer.

RESEARCH SHOWS MARBLING IMPORTANT AND COMPLICATED
To start a lively discussion amongst a group of cattlemen,
just utter the word, “marbling.” It’s been called one of the
most emotive words in the beef industry. From those who
dismiss it as unimportant to the staunch defenders, opinions
will vary.

MANAGEMENT AT WEANING IS CRITICAL TO CALVES’ EFFICIENCY

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER MCCORMICK — DOG DAZE
“I don’t know why they call these the dog days of summer,”

anything in this heat.”

CONTRACTS BETWEEN PARENTS/CHILDREN CAN BE TRICKY
Rodeos, Olympic equestrian sports, skateboarding, car
racing, golf, tennis and other sports have several things in
common: Winning in these sports can bring lucrative prizes,
scholarships, and advertising endorsement contracts. Some
children show great promise in sports, such as Tiger Woods
did in golf. Parents understandably want to help develop the
sporting skills of talented children. This means funding and
managing their child’s aspiring career as an athlete in one
field or another.

BREEDERS MUST BUILD GOOD REPUTATION TO MARKET CATTLE

product. A seedstock producer’s display case is the sale
ring where potential customers appraise his offering.

WHO WANTS TO BE PERFECT?
There’s nothing like a branding to bring a community of
cattlemen together. From North Dakota to Nevada, generations
of producers gather each year to tackle the big project and
then celebrate its completion.

Caps Lock
Your keyboard has small, hard to see lights (LEDs) to
indicate if your CAPS, NUM and SCROLL lock keys are on or
off. Sometimes when I’m in a hurry typing I accidentally
hit the Caps Lock button and then have to retype.
Here’s how to make your computer beep whenever any of the
lock keys change state: Go to the Control Panel and Double
click Accessibility Options and check ToggleKeys checkbox.

SPEED UP DELETE
To speed up file deletion, turn off Windows’s delete
confirmation. First, right-click the Recycle Bin on your
Desktop and select Properties from the pop-up menu. Click
the “Global” tab and check the radio button labeled “Use one
setting for all drives.” Uncheck the box labeled “Display
delete confirmation dialog box.” Finally, click Apply and OK
to save changes. If you make a mistake you can still
recover the file from the Recycle Bin.
