NUTRITION HAS HUGE EFFECT ON CATTLE’S REPRODUCTION
In working with various cattle producing clients the one
fact that I work hardest to impress upon the owner or
operator is that there is no replacement for good genetics,
sound management and proper nutrition.

ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
If you ask me, Rotary Club members are amongst the finest
people on earth. Besides all the good deeds they do the
reason I have such a deep affection for Rotary is because
they helped educate me.

PROPER NUTRITION MAKES HEIFER A MOMMA COW
In the beef business, cattlemen have to design a diet for
growing animals that will help heifers grow into productive
members of the cow herd.

TUNE UP THE BEEF MACHINE WITH GOOD MANAGEMENT
The cow herd on many ranches is its own factory. However, in
a lot of situations once that cow’s shift is over, weaning
time, most cattlemen begin thinking about the calf and cows
are left to fend for themselves.

PRECONDITIONED CALVES RECEIVE PREMIUM AT MARKET
Preconditioned calves (vaccinated prior to weaning) and
weaned calves generally bring a $3 to $5 premium (or higher)
at market time compared to unvaccinated or unweaned calves.

BEEF EXPORT CONTINUES REBOUND
The Boston Red Sox have won two World Series championships
in the past four years. The New England Patriots have won
three Super Bowls in the past seven years. When it comes to
success, both could take a lesson from the U.S. pork
industry, which achieved its 16th consecutive record-setting
year of exports in 2007, according to statistics compiled by
the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

YOUNG GUNS PROVIDE PROGRESSIVE GENETICS TO HERDS
An eye toward the future has always been a quality shared by
top cattlemen. Whether it’s a seedstock producer positioning
the herd to have a viable genetic base for generations to
come or a commercial cattlemen looking to gain the edge by
capitalizing on the right combination of genetics and
management to be profitable in any market scenario, forward
thinking has dominated production of recent times.

REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF BLOAT THROUGH MANAGEMENT
Every year about now, thousands of head of cattle are turned
out on lush, green pastures that have sprung up after a long
hard winter. Endemic with the growth of these pastures is a
condition most cattle producers are familiar with to at
least some degree, that of bloat.

Ravenna Land and Livestock is a fourth generation livestock
business that prides itself not only in the stock that they
raise, but in the relationships that they create with old
and new customers. Ravenna Land and Livestock was started in
the early 1930′s by owners Katie Swisher’s and Tobe Hammond’s
grandfather, shipping good draft teams from the Midwest to
eastern seaboard. He spent a lifetime buying cattle and
operating two successful markets, staying very active in the
business until his early nineties. Today, the ranch is
operated by third and fourth generations Katie Swisher and
Tobe Hammond and is located in central Nebraska on the edge
of the famous Nebraska sand hills and just north of the
Platte Valley. They breed working Quarter horses focused on
foundation bloodlines and also maintain spring and fall cow
herds, a small feedlot as well as a sheep flock. Along with
the daily chores, Katie is active in horse health and is a
horse chiropractor, and Tobe is an order buyer. This nice
website gives visitors a good look at all of the activities
of Ravenna Land and Livestock. I really like this website.
Congratulations to Ravena Land and Livestock on a job well
done.
