PRODUCERS USE NATURAL SOLUTIONS IN HERD MANAGEMENT
With the arrival of 2008 we typically take time to reflect
on the past and look to the new year with anticipation,
excitement and in many cases some trepidation. With all the
changes in the industry over the last few years, the new
year will only bring more of the same.

RESEARCH TARGETS MEAT QUALITY BEFORE HARVEST

purchase and until use, but those bringing the meat to
market must manage numerous factors before it reaches the
customer.

GOOD HERD HEALTH PROGRAM CAN PREVENT CALF SCOURS
As we have discussed many times, research and practice has
shown the link between health, nutrition and management.
This is especially true in young calves, especially those
born in the winter and spring during periods of cold and wet
weather.

SPECIAL HEIFER SALES ADD VALUE TO REPLACEMENTS
As markets have evolved, it has changed the face of the beef
industry. In the early years it was almost sacrilegious to
purchase replacement females from the so-called traders in
the industry. After all the first question was “If they’re
so good why didn’t you keep them yourself?”

IT’S THE PITTS — THE COWBOY TEST
There is mounting evidence that if modern man continues to
be feminized by society at the current rate that in just two
decades there will be virtually no difference, other than a
little plumbing, between the sexes.

HUNTIN’ DAYLIGHT — SO LONG INCENTIVE
If the Farm Bill passed by the Senate holds up—already
passed by the House of Representatives; it was headed to a
joint conference committee at the end of December—the high
price of feed and energy won’t matter much because there
won’t be a lot of incentive for cattle producers to continue
assuming the risk of staying in business.
