Weather has impacted the TX Panhandle North thru the Dakota
Line quite favorably from the supply side. Several thousand
deads. The big Up is tissue shrink which significantly
reduces total harvestable beef tonnage thru the rest of 07
(lighter, Later and less of em too). Mother Nature may have
accomplished what all the govt trade groups cannot. When a
Foreign Beef consumer cannot get supply, perhaps that tends
to be when they really need product.
High grain dictates More cattle to grass now (also a
significantly later and lower harvest tonnage factor for
beef). Granted, Corn By Products of 4 Billion bushels plus
in 07 may end up non indexed to beans and corn. Way to much
by-product supply for 07, with only the beef business as the
main customer for such feeds.
The western cattle are artificially cheap due to weather
conditions. Call Cattle Wizard for feeder cattle,
replacement cattle and cows. 505/483-0522

TAKE OPPORTUNITIES TO BOOST REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE
There is one absolute fact that is central to the cow/calf
sector of the beef industry. In order for an operation to
“work” you have to get cows bred and get them bred
efficiently.

NEVER MEET YOUR HEROES
I suppose you heard about the big uproar at the National FFA
Convention where several courageous FFA members walked out
on Carrie Underwood’s performance because she turned out to
be a vegetarian/animal rightist who would rather sing to
cows than eat them.

COMMODITY INSIGHT
Early this week, head USDA economist Keith Collins stated,
“We have a bull on the loose here and it is going to have a
lot of implications for American agriculture and our
population.” Mr. Collins was referring to surging demand for
corn to produce ethanol. Corn is the bull he says is on the
lose.

EFFICIENT CALVING REQUIRES PRE-SEASON MANAGEMENT
One of the most critical times of the year on breeding
cattle operations is calving season. In general, cattle
ranches or farms calve in three different time frames:
spring, fall or year round.

interesting people and constant companionship. So here she
was behind the wheel of an eighteen wheeler stuck in Denver
traffic while her “sleeping bag” was sawing logs in the
sleeper.

ANGUS, A SUPERIOR PRODUCT OR SUPERIOR MARKETING?
There is a hot discussion going on on our Q&A Boards about
why black cattle often bring a premium at the sale barn.
Why don’t you jump in the discussion and give your opinion?

COST CONTROL IS A MAJOR FACTOR FOR PROFITABILITY
In the last issue we began a discussion of some strategies
for reducing the production costs on a typical beef cattle
operation. In this issue we will continue this discussion
and take a further look at some concepts that can be applied

THE CASE FOR CASE READY
“This will change the way we breed cattle, feed cattle
and stocker cattle,” said Bill Mies, trusted industry observer
and analyst. He was addressing the recent Texas Cattle Feeders
Association annual meeting in Dallas. “This” is the case-ready
revolution, and it’s blasting along at warp speed. If you’re
not yet familiar with it don’t miss this article!

FEED AND SUPPLEMENT OPTIONS FOR CATTLE
Many producers commonly take for granted that everything we
feed to cattle has to revolve around some combination of
corn or milo, soybean meal or cottonseed meal. Read about
the many other options.

Microsoft Vista
Vista, Microsoft’s replacement for WindowsXP is coming out
this week. The question is should you upgrade? Probably
not. While it is slightly more secure and stable than XP,
the gain is probably not worth the money. It requires a lot
of computing power so unless your computer is less than 2
years old it will probably not handle the software. So I
would advise you to wait until you buy a new computer and it
will come with Vista installed.
OR
Setting Your Computer’s Clock Over the Internet
To set your XP system clock to a time server on the Internet.
1. Double-click the time on your taskbar
2. Click the Internet Time tab
3. Check Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server
4. Click on the Update Now button
and your time will always be correct!
